Well, as we’ve said a number of times, you should always start with keyword, market, and niche research.  Traditionally, this is done before looking for an affiliate marketing company or affiliate program.

Alternatively, you could also do the following: first find one good affiliate marketing company and then, look to see if there are programs, products, or services promoted through that company that you can also promote.  Then, when you find a product or service that seems fitting for you, you can then do your keyword, market, and niche research and then decide if this is appropriate for you to promote.

Most affiliate marketing companies (at least, the ones listed below) function as 3rd-party payment processors.  That is, when a customer buys or signs up with a product or service offered through a certain company, the company usually processes the transaction, sends a portion of the transaction to the merchant (vendor, product creator), pays the affiliate, and keeps a small portion of the transaction for itself.

A List of Affiliate Marketing Companies

Listed below are 6 traditional affiliate marketing companies.  This is by no means and exhaustive list—there are so many affiliate companies to evaluate for inclusion here.  But you can be sure that the companies listed here are reputable, and from our research, will pay you for your results.

Clickbank

Among core Internet marketers, Clickbank is probably the most well-known affiliate marketing company.  Clickbank, which started in 1998, is a marketplace for digitally-downloadable products.  For years, e-books, software, and other digital products have been made available via Clickbank.

One great thing about Clickbank is that, since it offers digital products, the affiliate profit margin can be very high.  50% to 75% affiliate commissions are very common in the CB marketplace.

One criticism about Clickbank is that there are too many affiliates in it, that the competition is too high.  This is somewhat true, because almost every Internet marketer has heard of Clickbank, but there are many, many products in Clickbank.

Amazon

The Amazon Associate program (affiliate program) started around 1996.  A lot of people say that Amazon’s was the first affiliate program online.  Wikipedia says no, but regardless, a lot agree that Amazon is definitely one of the first, and the company that was the first to prove the viability of affiliate marketing.

Virtually everything sold on Amazon can be sold via their affiliate program.  If you refer someone to Amazon via your affiliate link, you can, for about 24 hours, earn a commission on anything they buy.

One criticism about Amazon (and, most physical product based companies/programs) is that the affiliate profit margin (affiliate commission) is rather low (about 4% to 15%).

Commission Junction (CJ)

Many, many merchants run their affiliate programs through Commission Junction.  In fact, CJ used to manage eBay’s affiliate program.  On this site, we’ve spoke of Brian Johnson’s success with Halloween costume marketing.  He’s an affiliate of BuyCostumes.com, which runs it’s affiliate program through CJ.

As an affiliate, you can find many products to promote here.

LinkShare

You’ve probably heard of Macy’s, 1-800-Flowers, Delta, iTunes, and Avon?  Well, they’re all clients of LinkShare.  That is, LinkShare is the affiliate marketing company that runs their affiliate programs.

Share A Sale

Led by Brian Littleton, this one is also worth mentioning.

Clixgalore

One thing about Clixgalore is that, for merchants, they offer 5 scaled levels.  They pay affiliates on a monthly schedule when their commission is at least $50 US.

In conclusion, these are a few good affiliate marketing companies to deal with.

If you’re serious about affiliate marketing, you may also wish to consider AffiloJetpack, which is a product by Mark Ling that really eliminates a lot of the common hurdles that come with affiliate marketing.
