Affiliate marketing programs come in a very wide variety, and it can be difficult to give a solid definition that would apply to all affiliate programs.
Having said that, an affiliate marketing program is basically an arrangement where affiliates are allowed to promote a certain company, program, product, or offer. The understanding is that if the affiliate refers a visitor to the vendor, and the vendor complete a certain action (buys, enrolls, becomes a lead, etc.), the affiliate is rewarded with an affiliate commission.
Before an affiliate marketing program is started, there’s usually a product or service that can be sold online. (Generally speaking, affiliate marketing is done online, which renders affiliate marketing as a type of Internet marketing program.) The vendor (creator) of the product or service then decides that, in order for the product to sell more, it should recruit the efforts of affiliate marketers who’ll advertise and promote their product or service.
At this point, the vendor has to choose to either run their affiliate marketing program on their own, or contract the help of an affiliate marketing network. There are many companies that offer third-party affiliate network programs, such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, and even Google.
The benefit of going with affiliate companies are that they already have thousands and thousands of affiliates, so the vendor doesn’t have to start from scratch. This can save a lot of time, effort, and overhead, because usually, there is a lot of overhead that comes with running an affiliate program. Examples of such overhead are the time it takes to train and recruit affiliates, investment in affiliate marketing software to manage and track all your affiliates, and having to pay them all on time.
One very noteworthy and interesting part of Internet marketing involves viral marketing programs. Viral marketing involves spreading a message that just continues to spread and spread on it’s own, like a virus does. Usually, something spreads because other people want to share (spread) it. A great, timely message, something neat, something great that naturally attracts attention…all those are great ways to do viral marketing.
If you’re looking for how to be a successful affiliate, it’s good to keep in mind that it’s best when you can spread a message and your affiliate links virally. There are many, many affiliate marketing tips that can guide you as you do this, but basically, if you (or your vendor) has something great to share, then share it, and watch it spread like wildfire. For example, think of a great YouTube video that has over a million views: it’s great because people liked it. What is it about what you’re affiliated with that’s worth sharing? If you could do this consistently, there are many affiliate networks that would love to have you as an affiliate.
Tips For Finding Good Affiliate Marketing Programs
One thing to keep in mind is that there are some great affiliate programs, some good ones, and then, ones to be avoided. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Generally speaking, it’s better to be involved with third-party affiliate networks that have vendors who have contracted with them. That way, there’s more transparency, as opposed to affiliate programs that are run in-house. The problem with in-house programs (with the exception of well-known vendors such as Amazon and eBay, which run their own affiliate programs), is that if the company has financial problems, they can go out of business without paying you your commissions.
- Try to promote a product or service that has a vendor that tries to help you and give you affiliate materials, such as banners, sample articles, and content.
Keep these in mind, and you’ll increase your chances of success in Internet marketing.
