Commission Junction lawsuit: Valueclick is the parent company of Commission Junction (CJ), which is a third-party affiliate marketing company, much like Clickbank and Linkshare are. Although Commission Junction is a reputable company, which handles the affiliate programs of many well-established companies, it’s history is a bit stained.
This article covers the Commission Junction class action lawsuit, which occurred around April 2007. It’s formally known as “Settlement Recovery Center et al. v. ValueClick, Inc. et al., No. 2:07-cv-02638-FMC-CTx” According to our research, this lawsuit occurred because Valueclick had failed to closely monitor their networks. This failure gave way for adware to be run on their networks. Adware, in and of itself, isn’t bad, but in this case, the adware that was allowed to run on Commission Junction’s network caused the theft of a lot of affiliates and publishers.
This is because the particular adware that was run on CJ was a malicious type of software. It basically attempted to hijack and steal commissions from publishers (affiliates) and advertisers who belonged to the affiliate marketing programs run by CJ.
In fact, if you search online, there’s a copy of an e-mail that was apparently sent to Commission Junction’s affiliates. It basically says what this article has told you so far, and said that you could file a claim. The deadline to do so was September 2008.
According to our research, there was even a site set up for this, called www.CJSettlement.com The Commission Junction settlement was where CJ had an open invitation for affiliates who felt that they hadn’t received pay, to apply for their absent or underpaid commissions. CJSettlement.com seems to have been taken down now, and it currently redirects to the official Commission Junction site.
One thing that’s interesting about this whole lawsuit is that it has to do with tracking. That is, for affiliates to find out that something weird was going on, they’d have to track things to a definite, provable degree. The thing is, tracking can often be tricky, due to many different factors.
Whatever the case, a number of affiliates must’ve found out that something had gone array, and been able to gather enough proof that a lawyer would be confident in presenting a case. And, from our research, it appears that the plaintiffs (the affiliates) of this class action lawsuit won. As a result, the e-mail we mentioned above was sent out, and the CJ settlement site was set up.
Does This Commission Junction Lawsuit Mean CJ Is A Scam?
So, does this mean that Commission Junction is a scam? No. We have another article on this site that functions as a Commission Junction review, and from our research, despite this lawsuit, it’s an otherwise reputable company. It’s a great addition to the affiliate marketing industry.
