As you probably know, Commission Junction is a third-party affiliate marketing company, much like Clickbank, Linkshare, and Share A Sale are. There are a few key benefits of doing online business via a third-party affiliate arrangement.
For one, there’s a lot more transparency. For example, let’s consider a typical two-party affiliate arrangement: the affiliate and the vendor, who runs the affiliate program. The affiliate has been sending traffic to the sales page of the vendor. This traffic (these visitors) buy the vendor’s products, and as such, the affiliate has earned an affiliate commission. The vendor, who runs their own affiliate program, owes the affiliate the appropriate commission.
Now, let’s say that the vendor’s business hits on hard times. In fact, let’s say that the vendor goes out of business. Well, too bad for the affiliate…he’s probably not going to get his commission now, because the business has gone bankrupt.
In fact, a vendor doesn’t have to go out of business for affiliates not to get paid—an unscrupulous vendor can simply “take the money and run,” and because it’s an in-house affiliate program, it’s hard to see the inside. That is, the vendor might not release statistics showing that the affiliate made the sale.
Of course, not every affiliate marketing program that’s in-house is like this. Amazon and eBay are in-house affiliate marketing programs, and they’re very trustworthy companies.
However, because of the potential for unscrupulous vendors to cheat affiliates, a third-party arrangement is preferable.
Plus, a third-party arrangement takes a lot of the burden off of the vendor. Instead of having to manage a number of affiliates, the third-party company, such as Commisson Junction, takes care of this. They track affiliate links, track visitors, take care of receipts, do what they can to take care of taxes, pay affiliates, and process transactions.
Now, as far as Commission Junction is concerned, we do have to mention one bad thing: a couple of years ago, CJ was involved involved in a class action lawsuit. We’ve written an article about this lawsuit. Basically, Commission Junction allowed malware on their networks, and this malicious software hijacked the commissions of a number of affiliates.
After evidence was gathered, a lawsuit ensued. A settlement was then issued.
Having said that, the fact that CJ allowed affiliate commissions to be hijacked in the past does not mean that Commission Junction is a scam. Our research indicates that it’s not. To the contrary, we believe CJ is an honest, well-established company.
