The use of Adwords editor is an amazing timesaver. This allows you to upload and edit your campaigns without too much hassle and also you can do it when you don’t have access to the Internet. If you follow the strategy in this post where we talked about how a Special Forces sniper would start every Adword campaign you’ll know how cool Adwords Editor is.
Here’s an example: if you’re on a flight you can check out all of your Adwords campaigns, edit them, and re-upload the data once you can access the Internet again.
This also allows you to quickly group your keywords, and user specific Adwords editor formula to place individual bids on each of your keywords. First things first, you need to go and download it, and you can do that from here:

I won’t bore you with a “how to sign-up” walkthrough, as it’s pretty straight forward. Plus it’s totally free, so get downloading.
Keyword Grouping
Splitting up your list of keywords into more relevant Ad Groups is the fastest and easiest way of increasing your profitability and mega-boosting your ROI. When you first create an Ad Group, try to have 50 keywords or less in that group, and then, over time, reduce that to 20 keywords, then to 10, then to 5, and then for the most profitable keywords, have just ONE unique keyword for each Ad (with broad, exact and phrase match so that you have 3 keywords).
Now doing this manually is a very time consuming and painfully slow process, especially if you have hundreds of Ad Groups and thousands upon thousands of keywords.
This is where Adwords Editor comes into play.
Here’s how you do it:
Let’s assume you have already set-up your campaign and created an Ad Group in either your Adwords account or directly in Adwords Editor. So, our goal now is to reduce the number of keywords in our Ad Group by grouping them thematically into more targeted, relevant and laser focused Ad Groups via Adwords Editor.
So, for instance, you could have labeled the Campaign “Acne Free in 3 Days” as that’s the name of the affiliate product and website, and have called the Ad Group “Clear Skin 3 Days”. I often create this type of campaign in a throwaway Adwords account that I use solely for this.
What I do is in a separate Adwords accounts, take all of my keywords I get from my initial keyword research and put them all in one adgroup. So for example I usually have around 100 keywords in this One Ad Group, which is, as you know, NOT good!
So, this is where Adwords Editor’s magic comes into play…
In the Google Adwords Editor’s menu, go to TOOLS, and then select “Keyword Grouper”.
Then, simply click on “Generate Common Terms”. So, Adwords Editor might find that my list of around 100 keywords can be split into a group of common terms. Then, we simply hit ‘Next’ and let Adwords Editor do it’s thing.
Adwords Editor might then suggest that I split my 1 Ad Group into 16 different Ad Groups. I know I said to stick between 5-10 adgroups, but as long as you have around the maximum of 100 keywords, go with the suggested Adwords Editor Adgroups.
The 5-10 figures are just an approximate number that you will usually get from this process, depending of course, on the actual keywords and the amount of keywords. Next make sure you select “Yes, copy text ads into each new ad group” and hit Finish!
Now you can go back through and edit each individual Adgroup’s ads, and make them relevant to the adgroup, as well as direct each ad to a relevant landing page (if you wish to go that far).
The next step would be to go back to your Adwords account that you will be using to run the campaign and upload the data using the bidding strategy outlined above. I have found no other faster and more accurate way to construct and Adgroups. Follow this exact strategy and Google will love you for it.
There are tons of other ways you can go on to use Adwords Editor. All I can say is, if you’re a serious multi-campaigner, then Editor is almost a must! I suggest you download it, find some tutorials on Google and exploit all of its features. It is quite possible the most powerful PPC softwares on the net and it is completely FREE. Just get it.
