Product Launch Formula 3 is coming soon—on the 22nd of June, 2010. As part of the release of pre-launch content that prepares people for his launch, Jeff Walker, on June 15th, released his second pre-launch video. This video was titled Product Launch Disasters. At the beginning of the video, Jeff tells the viewer that they’ll learn how to avoid some of the biggest mistakes that have been committed during product launches.
One of the key concepts to be taken away from this video is that of the “product launch parachute.” It can basically be summarized as not having “a single point of failure.” That is, you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket.
For example, during a product launch, you don’t want to rely on only one e-mail; instead, you want to use a series of e-mails. You don’t want to rely on only one JV partner; instead, you want a handful of JV partners. You want to set things up in a way so that if something goes one wrong with one thing, it can easily be replaced.
Product Launch Formula 3.0 Creator Names Marketers Who Have Blundered
One interesting thing about this video is that Jeff Walker “names names.” He names some of the well-known Internet marketers and the mistakes that have happened during some of their product launches:
- Not too long ago, Andy Jenkins released Video Boss. What a lot of people may not know is that Andy left the order link live before it was supposed to be live. Somehow, one affiliate found out about this, got excited, and started selling Video Boss about 24 hours before the official launch. But still…Andy’s Video Boss product launch went on to be very successful.
- Although probably not a mistake on his part, Yanik Silver had a shopping cart problem that delayed his launch for 2 full days. Yes, 2 full days. For weeks, Yanik had been preparing people for this particular day, only for it to be delayed. We imagine that there were a lot of frustrated people. But regardless of that, Yaniks’s launch was still successful.
- Eben Pagan, who’s known for his Double Your Dating series and recently released Guru Blueprint, also made a mistake: his blog wasn’t configured. He had sent out an e-mail to his JV partners giving them the thumbs up to start sending traffic…only to change his decision an hour later. But, as with Andy’s and Yanik’s launches, Eben’s still went on to be successful.
- Mike Filsaime made a mistake that he probably slapped himself for: his web page went live, with blanks! He had some fill-in-the-blank spaces that were left blank. But because of how his marketing was done, this was a very minor (though obvious) problem, and Mike still went on to have a successful launch. In fact, his site’s server was so busy he couldn’t get in to make those corrections until 40 minutes had passed.
- Even the Product Launch Formula master himself admits to having forgotten to mail his own list about his own product. Luckily, his other partners had mailed to their lists, and Jeff eventually did. He went on to have a successful product launch.
One of the reasons why none of these product launch blunders were catastrophic is because of the “launch conversation” that takes place. Basically, your prospects are so used to you, and anticipating what you’re going to launch, that problems like the ones listed above, even if they’re significant problems, are usually overcome.
From previous launches, this looks like it’s going to be something great. We consider expect Product Launch Formula to be a great success, and a true descendant of the original version that’s become so well loved among Internet marketers.
