SEO Link Building: Using Blog Networks to Build Links

So you need to build some backlinks to your site, but don’t know where to start.  Maybe you’ve tried some things but didn’t have a real plan to stay on top of things, or didn’t yield the kind of results you had hoped for.

A true and effective link strategy is kind of a mystery to most marketers who want to grab top 10 rankings in Google for those big money keywords.   Just about every link building guide will probably mention various methods for effective link building like link bait content, directory submissions, link exchanges, and even some link building software like SENuke.

But what’s the best link building strategy out there?  How can you get the most bang for your buck with as little time and effort involved in your link building campaign as possible?

In this new link building strategy series we’re going to go through several SEO link building strategies that just plain work to bring the kind of results you need to rank well in the search engines.  So what we are going to cover first is something that is one of the most effective ways to build real, quality one-way backlinks to your site.

Link Building with Blog Networks

If you’re a regular reader, you may have seen our most recent link building article showing how to use web 2.0 properties to build backlinks quickly and easily.  The link building strategy we’ll cover in this article is similar to that, but a bit more effective.

Link building is all about 2 things:

• Content Distribution
• The proper strategy

We’re going to speak about both of those today, because it doesn’t help to have one without the other. In fact, it hurts.

Content Distribution & Link Building

The biggest goal in any link building campaign is to get quality links back to your site from as many sources as possible.  In order to get links you need to have the ability to spread your content as far and wide as possible – as easily as possible.

There’s a lot of ways to do that, for example using a link building software like SENuke to automate the process of creating and posting content to web 2.0 social networks, blog-type sites (like Blogger, Live Journal, etc), social bookmarking sites, video sites, RSS sites, and more.

In order to have an effective link building campaign, you need to be able to distribute your content across several different types of link sources (including all of the ones just mentioned).   Those are all good places to get links, and will certainly boost your rankings if you do it right.  But what we are going to discuss today is distributing your content in order to build an army of some of the best backlinks you can get.

What’s The Best Backlink?

Generally, the best kind of backlink you can get back to your site has these characteristics:

• It’s a one way link back to your site from another website
• It’s an “in-content” link – meaning that your site is linked to from somewhere within the main content of the page.
• The content from which you being linked from is relevant and unique.
• It uses relevant, keyword-rich anchor text (the exact text used as the link)

Now of course there are a few other factors that make links even stronger, like getting a link from an authority site with a high page rank – but really at this point is a question of quality versus quantity.

If you’re not able to get a bunch of really high quality backlinks from established, authority sites (most site owners) then you need to turn your focus to quantity.  You need to get as many links as possible that follow the four characteristics I just laid out for good backlinks.

There’s a way to do that quickly and easily, which to become a member of a blog network in which you’re able to distribute your unique content to blogs within the entire network.  Obviously you’ll be linking back to your site from within that content, allowing you to build a lot of target backlinks to your site quickly.

There are several of these blog networks, some are better than other – some are just plain detrimental to use for any site you want to keep from getting severely penalized in the search engines.

What follows below is a strategy to have your unique content distributed across several websites using a couple blog networks that we can recommend that you use for your link building activities.  Those two blog networks are MyArticleNetwork from Matt Callen and the coming SEO Linkvine from Brad Callen.

Before You Start Building Links

Build links to a site only works if the site is actually worthy of ranking in the search engines.  Of course, there are brute force linking methods where occasionally low-quality sites can get ranked for competitive keyword terms, but that’s another story and not a route you want to go down with any site you care about keeping around.

So it helps to have your internal affairs in terms of SEO in order before you start a serious link building and promotion campaign.  That start with having quality, themed content and a good internal linking structure.  Having that in place will allow you to execute a link building campaign a higher level because you’re giving Google exactly what they want.

So if you’ve got a site that’s in fairly good shape in terms of its internal SEO, you’re ready to start putting some of the link building strategies we’ll talk about in this link building strategy series to work.  The first of which we’ll go through the steps now.

Step 1: You Need Unique Content

Remember one of the criteria for a good backlink is getting one from another site that has relevant, and unique content on it.  Since you’ll be distributing your content across hundreds of blogs, it’s up to you to provide the unique content.

If you don’t have 8 hours a day, it can be difficult to pump out enough content to meet your needs.  We want to build links quickly and efficiently and sitting around writing content is not the way to do that.

So to save you time and work you have two options.  The first is to write seed articles yourself and then use a spinning software to create a spinner article from it.  The second is to use high quality PLR content and again convert it into a spinner article.

Write Your Own Content

Of course, if you don’t really have the resources to be a member of a PLR content site, then you can start by writing your own content.  Be sure to research it well, in order to write nicely themed content that will rank well in the search engines.  You can use the Google Keyword Tool to get ideas for what kind of keywords to use when writing your articles.

Step 2: Make the Content Unique
