As a sole business owner and operator, you may find that you simply do not have all the time or skill to complete all the daily tasks of running an online business.
In the past, you may have heard of outsourcing, and even went to a freelance site to find someone to do things for you. And, you may have had mixed or poor results.
If you’ve ever wondered, “How can I find talented, reliable, affordable people who can do the job for me?” you’ve come to the right place.
In this article, we’re going to what true, successful outsourcing really is, why you should outsource, what you need to know, and what you need to do.
Outsourcing: A Good Definition
Before we get much further, let’s address one potential object that some business owners may have about outsourcing: “I can’t afford it.”
As John Reese reports in his informative Outsource Force videos, you can find talented people to help you for as little as $2.00 USD an hour.
So, let’s use that $2/hour statistic to resolve this.
If you, the business owner, estimate that 1 hour of your time is worth $20 (which is very, very conservative), and having another person to help you can add at least 1 more productive hour to your day, it’s very easy to see that the $2 is money well invested.
Of course, this example is very simplistic. Things such as your business model, how well the person is trained, how valuable their task is, and how fast they complete it are all factors to consider. But even with those considerations, you can still see how outsourcing is very affordable.
So, let’s get into a good definition of outsourcing.
Since this article is written for sole (or “mom-and-pop”) Internet entrepreneurs (and not corporations), we can define outsourcing as the process whereby you find talented, reliable people to do tasks for you, pay them accordingly, and develop relationships with them.
If you’ve had bad experiences with some of the traditional freelance sites, and if you’ve been very observant, you might have seen a bit of contrast between our definition, and what you may have experienced in the past. That’s because with true outsourcing, when you find talented people, you develop good relationships with them. That is, you keep them. This is very different from what goes on at most freelance sites, where the person’s services are contracted with a one-time mentality.
If you want your business to last long term, you can see the value of having good people whom you can train, rely on, and who’ll also grow with you. It’s much better, affordable, and more stable than repeatedly hiring one-timers.
Finding good people, and then, keeping them. That’s what true outsourcing is.
Why You Should Consider Outsourcing
So, now that we’ve established a good definition of what true outsourcing is, why should you outsource? Here are a few reasons why:
- So that, eventually, everything that needs to get done, actually does get done (and, not necessarily by you).
- So you can multiply the amount of work that gets done.
- So you can decrease the number of hours you have to work.
- So your business can grow, and you can, ultimately, make more money.
5 Things You Need To Know For Outsourcing To Work For You
- This first one is obvious, but still worth mentioning: you need to have a big picture, a bird’s view idea of your business model and how it runs. Thankfully, you don’t have to know how to do absolutely everything, but you do have to know what all the pieces are, and how they fit in with the rest of the puzzle.
- You have to know that your business model, to some extent, works. Basically, you have to know that your business is profitable. For many of you reading, your businesses are already somewhat profitable, and you know that if you could just find the talent you need, your business would see an increase in profitability. This point about profitability is just mentioned to caution those who really aren’t ready for outsourcing, because 0 profitability multiplied by anything (another person, in this case), is still 0.
- You have to know what you’re not good at. In business, there are some things you can do better than others. You may not be tech savvy, and you may not be good at maintaining the back-end of your sites. That’s fine, you don’t have to be. But just know what you’re not proficient in. You can even make an inventory of your skill-set.
- Things you hate to do. This is different from things you’re not good at, because you might be good at doing some things, but just dislike doing them. They can be dealing with customers, refunds, upgrades, server issues, copywriting, creating videos…whatever you dislike. These are the “necessary evils,” so to speak, of running your business.
- Things that someone can do better than you. You may be “okay,” at doing something, and that’s good. In this business where you’re doing a lot of things on your own, you have to be somewhat proficient at everything, even if you’re just good enough at something to get the job done. This is a good thing, because you can then teach it to someone, and that person might inherently be able to do it better (or faster) than you can.
What You Need To Do For Outsourcing To Work
As far as what you need to do, this is where John Reese’s Outsource Force videos come into play, specifically, the first video. In that video, he introduces you to what he calls The 3 Priority Levels of Outsourcing.
Here they are:
Priority Level #1: Outsourcing Things You’re Not Good At
Priority Level #2: Outsourcing Things That You Hate
Priority Level #3: Outsourcing Things That Others Can Do Better Than You
In conclusion, we hope that this article has been very revealing, and that you’ve come across some ideas that you may not have thought of. Outsourcing can, and does, work. John Reese has experienced that, and this is what his Outsource Force program is intended to give you.

Outsourcing the grunt work is most essential in my opinion. In order to do things on a large scale, which is necessary to make good profits nowadays, there are only two ways: You automate things, so scripts and software does the time consuming easy tasks. If it can’t be automated, you need people to do it for you, cheap. You can do it all yourself, but since a day has only 24h you should focus on doing the tricky work, leaving repetitive tasks everybody can do to others. So, yes, outsourcing FTW!
Outsourcing can work well as long as you have a clear brief before you begin and ensure good communication is setup (which is often the biggest problem)
I have tried outsourcing some of my work in the past and to be honest I found it a nightmare! I was having someone write articles for me and found that I had to rewrite them before I could even use them. But, I do agree that when a business grows to a certain point outsourcing is essential, so I guess Im going to have to test the water again. I probably didn’t go to the right source before. At least this post has given me some very useful info and pointers. Thanks!!
